What is TESA?

TESA, or Testicular Sperm Aspiration, is a fertility treatment procedure that extracts sperm directly from a man's testicles. This minimally invasive technique is performed under local anesthesia and is primarily used to collect sperm for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) to assist with fertilization.

TESA is particularly suitable for men with azoospermia (the absence of sperm in the semen), which can result from blockages, unsuccessful vasectomy reversals, or genetic factors. It is also recommended for men undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy that affects sperm production and quality.

Process of TESA

The TESA procedure typically follows these straightforward steps:

  1. Local Anesthesia Administration

The procedure begins with the administration of local anesthesia to numb the testicular area.

  2. Sperm Aspiration

A fine needle is inserted into the testicle to aspirate spermatic fluid. This process is repeated in various areas of the testicle to maximize sperm collection.

  3. Examination of Sperm

The collected sperm undergoes thorough examination under a microscope to assess their quality and quantity.

  4. Injection of the Sperm

Finally, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is performed to inject the collected sperm directly into an egg, facilitating fertilization.

Benefits of TESA

TESA offers several significant benefits, including:

  • Increased Chance of Conceiving a Child: By providing viable sperm for ICSI, TESA enhances the chances of fertilization, embryo development, and successful implantation for couples facing male infertility challenges.
  • Suitable for Men Diagnosed with Azoospermia: TESA is an effective solution for men with azoospermia, allowing for the retrieval of viable sperm directly from the testes and improving the likelihood of conception.
  • Flexibility in Fertility Treatment Options: TESA offers couples more flexibility in their fertility treatment options, especially if they have not succeeded with other methods or prefer alternatives to sperm donation. It is a safe and minimally invasive procedure, reducing the need for more invasive surgeries.
  • A Safe and Convenient Procedure: TESA is a safe and painless outpatient procedure with minimal risks or side effects, allowing patients to resume their daily activities shortly after.
